Tiberios II

Tiberios II
   Emperor from 698-705. He was droungarios of the theme of Kibyrrhaiotai (qq.v.) when he rebelled against Leontios q.v.). His baptismal name was Apsimar; he assumed the name Tiberios when he came to the throne. He repatriated to Cyprus (q.v.) those inhabitants of the island captured by Abd al-Malik (q.v.), repaired the sea walls of Constantinople (q.v.), and attempted, unsuccessfully, to invade Syria (q.v.). However, he did nothing to check the advance of the Arabs (q.v.) across western North Africa (q.v.). He was overthrown by Justinian II (q.v.).
